Audrey Toguchi of Aiea, Hawaii, says her cancer went away after she prayed at the grave of Father Damien, a Catholic missionary who died more than a century ago. Now Pope Benedict XVI has approved the case as Damien’s second miracle, opening the way for the 19th-century priest to be declared a saint.

    One of my most cherished olfactory memories is the smell of the church all those mornings that I attended daily Mass before school as my Lenten obligation. When the pews weren’t packed with bodies and wet wool coats, the smell of incense was the prevailing bouquet. I used to sit there while the priest did his monotone recitation of the Mass, believing my soul was just a little more purified with each inhalation. And now you tell me God gives good girls cancer? Thanks a lot, Altar Boy.
