I just came across your list while doing a search of Liz Phair images. :)

Seriously, I think you should also do a list about artists that never quite made it mainstream although they had all the ingredients. The Sundays comes to mind. Although they released many singles that got airplay on alternative radio, none made the mainstream Top 40. The only song most people ever heard was their fine rendition of Wild Horses on that Bud commercial. For me, the song that should have been promoted and could have been a hit was "When I'm Thinking About You".

Thanks for sharing!

Wow! My brain hurts just trying to remember all these songs. Very cool set of posts. I didn't listen to too much top 40 radio so my judgement on these artist's success is probably skewed. Fountains of Wayne and Jimmy Eat World are the only groups I'd pick out at a first glance to have had only one big hit.

My daughter is starting to explore music beyond the top 40 playlist now and is hindered by the lack of a good radio station in Connecticut. I think I'll have to introduce her to some internet radio.

They’re a one-hit wonder in the technical sense: They had only one song reach Billboard’s Top 40 singles chart. That’s the criterion I’m using here (and it’s the standard a lot of people use when defining a “one-hit wonder.”)

But that's why I'm listing Garbage here. I'm saying their songs were good enough to be mainstream hits, and I don't understand why they weren't.

dude, garbage are NOT a one-hit wonder band.

#1 crush
only happy when it rains
i think im paranoid
special
when i grow up
why do you love me

are just some of their singles that have done really well. just cause they were never huge on mainstream radio, doesn't make them a one-hit. besides they're gonna do another album after she finishes her solo, you just wait.
